Kindergarten is where your child will begin to build the primary skills that form the foundations of reading, counting, and social interaction. In Kindergarten, children tend to be fairly active. They can run, hop, skip and jump without tripping over their own feet. Kindergartners learn facts and begin to grasp some basic concepts like: recognizing and naming colors and basic shape, knowing the letters of the alphabet and letter sounds, reciting their name, address and phone number, understanding basic concepts about print (such as knowing which way the pages go and how words are read left to right and top to bottom), knowing that stories have a beginning, middle and end, counting groups of objects up to 10 and reciting numbers to 20, sticking with an activity for 15 minutes and finishing a short project, and making plans about how to play, what to build or what to draw. In relation to language, most kindergarteners understand and can use thousands of words, usually in sentences five to eight words long. During the kindergarten school year, children’s social and emotional development tends to go beyond making friends and expressing feelings. They start understanding more complicated things like right and wrong. Always keep in mind that children develop at their own pace, however, it is our hope that we can work together to help each and every one of our Kindergarteners reach their potential.
Kindergarten is an important step for young children and is strongly recommended for all children. Research shows that kindergarten improves children’s health and wellbeing, helps them to develop strong social skills and encourages a love of learning. Children who go to a kindergarten program are more independent and confident and are more likely to make a smooth transition to primary grades, offering your child a range of learning experiences and activities that are both stimulating and fun.
At P.S. 207, children’s learning and curiosity are encouraged through experiences and activities, such as exploring the natural world, being exposed to new ideas and solving problems. Your child will be able to learn to work with others and make friends through group activities and cooperative play, express their creativity, for example, through music and art, build their communication skills by listening to and having conversations and develop the skills that they need for reading, writing and mathematics.
P.S. 207 Content Literacy & Math
At P.S. 207, we believe that our students need to develop what we refer to as advanced literacies in order to be academically and personally successful in today’s literacy and knowledge-based society. Advanced literacies refers to the skills and competencies that enable communication, spoken and written, in increasingly diverse ways and with increasingly diverse audiences. Our content-based units of study and lessons embed the Hallmarks of Advanced Literacy, as well as the Next Generation Standards which provide the foundation for the acquisition of new content through general literacy skills, content-specific literacy skills (such as map reading in the social studies,) and prior knowledge of content. These experiences are scaffolded in the early grades with a focus on Learning to Read and Write to prepare our students for Reading and Writing to Learn, preparing our student. Kindergarten Author Study: Ezra Jack Keats
At P.S. 207, each grade levels across our school engages in a weekly, year-long author study designed to spark students' life-long interest in reading. The author becomes a "writing mentor" for readers as they read and study his/her work and respond to it through a variety of writing while comparing and contrasting themes, analyzing text and illustrations, and making connections between an author's life, the books and the reader's own life and work. The author study promotes deeper understanding, and supports our focus on continuously building the advanced literacy skills of all of our students through daily experiences with engaging texts, vocabulary, writing and discussions.
